Chime Machine

In RIT's first-year class Engineering Design Tools, students are tasked with creating a "Chime Machine", with the goal of re-creating 30 seconds of our chosen song, "Brown Eyed Girl" by Van Morrison.

We utilized sections of Aluminum Conduit piping, 50g of PLA for 3D printing, 8 sq-ft of 1/4 inch plywood, 3 ft of 1x2, and various consumables. Electronics included 2 solenoids, three DC motors, and a given 'electronics box'. Research on vibration and resonance was done to determine the proper length of pipe needed to create the specific note. 3D modeling was done in OnShape, and the machine was coded using Arduino software.
